DESCRIPTION
Effective December 31, 1988 there is a worldwide ban on the disposal of plastic debris by ships. To respond to questions about the law (Annex V of the MARPOL Treaty), and the larger issue of marine debris, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has established the Marine Debris Information Office located at the Center for Marine Conservation (CMC) in Washington, DC
SERVICE AND ACTIVITIES
A major focus of out efforts has been educating those groups that are presently dumping plastic trash at sea and encouraging them to use alternatives. Under contract to NOAA, CMC distributes brochures, posters, slide shows, and numerous other materials to industries, recreation groups, and the general public through the Marine Debris Information Office (MDIO).
